Vortex-Genie 2 SI-0236 Review: Touch Actuation, Continuous Runs and Included Attachments

Conditional verdict: Consider the SI-0236 Vortex-Genie 2 when contact-actuated runs versus continuous actuation changes the work pattern, and the supplied cup and 3-inch platform suit the defined vessels.[1][2] Actuation mode and attachment choice are separate decisions: the manual describes touch operation with either attachment, not a cup-only touch mode.[2] The maker-linked catalog maps SI-0236 to G560, 120V North America; the manual supplies the G560 110–120V, 60Hz, 0.95A row.[2][3] This is a documentation-based review, not a mixing test.

Touch actuation: a contact-controlled run, not a timed program

The manual describes TOUCH actuation as starting when pressure is applied through a vessel to either the cup or platform and stopping when that pressure is released.[2] That is an actuation mechanism, not a recommended speed, sample-handling recipe or validated mixing duration. A contact-controlled pattern can matter more to a buyer than another nominal RPM figure.

The cup and platform serve different documented vessel categories, but neither should be assigned exclusively to one actuation mode. The manual describes a cup envelope up to 40 mm diameter and 200 mm tube length, and a platform for appropriate tubes, beakers and flasks.[2] Those statements do not establish every vessel’s secure fit, load capacity, containment or process outcome.

Continuous actuation is not guaranteed unattended containment

The linked manual describes continuous ON actuation that continues until stopped.[2] It does not make any vessel safe to leave on the supplied surface. Attachment suitability, vessel retention and the responsible method remain independent requirements. “Hands-free” marketing is not a guarantee of unattended process safety or even agitation.

This is a workflow distinction, not a claim that the platform produces a particular mixing outcome. The maker attributes a 4 mm orbit, while the published 600–3,200 RPM range is nominal and does not establish measured speed, counter feedback, or calibration accuracy [1]. If your decision depends on verified RPM or repeatable mixing uniformity, this record is insufficient.

The buyer’s central fork: contact bursts versus a running surface

Separate three questions before buying: does contact-controlled or continuous actuation fit the method; does the cup, platform or a separate compatible holder fit the vessel; and is the intended run adequately contained and supervised? Both base attachments are documented as supplied.[1][2][3] A flat surface is not automatically a secured multi-tube rack.

Do not infer that the cup and platform are interchangeable in practical capacity. The cup’s documented tube envelope and the platform’s listed vessel categories describe different use cases. Holders, clip plates, foam inserts, and other attachment options appear as separate accessories; they are not included merely because they appear near the product or in family literature [1][3].

Documentation gate: the current five-preset claim is unresolved

A buyer who needs programmable operation, a timer, or five selectable presets should skip this purchase unless the seller or maker resolves the conflict in writing. The current product page lists “5 preset modes,” but the current maker-linked manual describes TOUCH, ON, and OFF behavior with a speed control, while the 2014 family literature lists the exact Vortex-Genie 2 model as having no timer [1][2][3]. The sources do not establish a revision history that reconciles those descriptions.

That conflict does not erase the documented touch-versus-continuous decision, but it prevents a responsible claim that this exact SI-0236/G560 unit includes programmable presets or timing. Do not substitute the timer-equipped Vortex-Genie 2T or digital model, and do not assume a listing’s wording describes the physical unit you will receive. If presets or a timer are essential, the conditional verdict is skip pending exact-unit confirmation.

Electrical, environment, and package checks before a fit decision

The selected mapping is the 120V North American G560: 110–120V, 60Hz, 0.95A [2]. Confirm that your site’s electrical supply and the exact model marking match that condition. The manual specifies indoor use, 0–38°C, maximum 95% humidity, and elevation up to 2,000 m [2]. Those limits are part of the fit decision, not an invitation to generalize suitability to wet, hazardous, clinical, sterile, or containment-critical work.

The current maker page lists a power cord and manual; its accessory statements and the linked manual identify the pop-off cup and 3-inch platform.[1][2] The selected ordinary offer identifies Scientific Industries, SI-0236 and 120V.[4] Its seller, fulfillment, price and stock were checked as dated offer evidence, not inspected-carton contents or a guarantee of future availability.

Skip conditions and conditional verdict

Skip if your requirement is a verified timer, programmable five-preset control, numerical RPM calibration, guaranteed vessel containment, validated mixing uniformity, sterility, viability, clinical use, or a safety/compliance outcome not established by these sources. Also skip if you need accessories that are not explicitly included, or if the 120V G560 electrical and environmental conditions do not match your site.

Proceed conditionally if your need is ordinary, prepared, nonhazardous professional agitation and you can choose between the two documented workflows: cup for touch-actuated individual-tube bursts, platform for continuous installed-surface operation. The SI-0236/G560 is a plausible fit for that narrow decision, but the five-preset conflict remains open and should be treated as a purchase-blocking question whenever programmable control is essential.

The buying decision

Conditional fit when the documented contact-versus-continuous actuation and a compatible cup/platform or separately verified holder answer the method’s needs.[1][2] Do not equate cup with touch only or platform with continuous only. Skip if programmable presets, a timer, calibrated RPM, secure containment or validated outcomes are essential and unresolved. The current five-preset statement still conflicts with the linked manual and family catalog.[1][2][3]

The manual cover’s G560E-100V label differs from its table’s G560-100V; neither is transferred to selected G560.[2]
