Hanna HI98121 Review: Selectable pH and ORP, Not Automatic Logging

Conditional verdict: Consider HI98121 for a defined pH-or-ORP potential record with temperature alongside it, when a portable standalone tester fits the method.[1][2] It is not a simultaneous independent pH-plus-ORP recorder, a logging system or a water-safety verdict. This is a documentation-based review, not a hands-on test.

What it measures

Published ranges are −2.00 to 16.00 pH at 0.01 pH resolution, ±1000 mV ORP at 1 mV resolution, and −5.0 to 60.0°C temperature at 0.1-degree resolution.[1][2] The manual conditions its ±0.05 pH, ±2 mV and ±0.5°C/±1°F accuracy figures at 25°C/77°F.[2] Display increments and nominal error bounds do not establish achieved sample uncertainty.

The display is not a simultaneous independent pH-plus-ORP dashboard. You select pH or ORP as the primary measurement, while temperature appears on the second LCD line. That distinction matters when a workflow needs two separate analytical results captured at the same moment. ORP is a redox-potential reading in millivolts; it is not a converted disinfectant concentration, contamination score, pathogen test, potability certification, health assessment, or regulatory-compliance result.[1][2]

Modes, controls, and compensation

The two-button interface keeps the central choices simple. SET/HOLD selects pH or ORP and can freeze the displayed reading; /MODE powers the tester, enters setup, and moves between settings. A stability tag indicates that the reading has not yet settled and disappears when the instrument considers the reading stable. The temperature unit can be changed between Celsius and Fahrenheit, and the pH buffer family can be selected in setup.[2]

Automatic temperature compensation is specified for pH readings only. It should not be described as automatic temperature compensation for ORP. pH supports automatic one- or two-point calibration using the selected standard-buffer set, while ORP is factory calibrated. The reader therefore suits users who need routine pH calibration but should not be presented as offering user ORP calibration or a general calibration-management system.[1][2]

There is no supported promise here of USB connectivity, computer logging, clock-stamped records, export, measurement history, or power-loss retention. The HOLD function freezes what is on the LCD; it does not create an electronic record. An eight-minute non-use auto-off and a low-battery protection system are useful operating features, not a substitute for a documented measurement process.[1][2]

Probe, package, and physical fit

The manufacturer identifies the included HI73127 as a replaceable pH electrode and the instrument’s ORP sensor as fixed. The manual likewise identifies the HI73127 pH electrode and its removal tool. One ordinary marketplace listing describes the product as having a replaceable ORP electrode, which conflicts with the current manufacturer and manual evidence; buyers should not assume that an ORP cartridge is replaceable or transfer a replacement part from another Hanna model.[1][2][3]

The current manufacturer page lists 163 x 40 x 26 mm and 100 g, while the 2019 manual lists 171 x 41 x 26 mm and 83 g. These unresolved differences should not be used to claim a particular revision. The instrument warranty is listed as one year; the manual separately states six months for the electrode.[1][2]

The maker and manual list 20 mL sachets: one each of pH 4.01 and 7.01 buffers, storage solution and cleaning solution, plus two 470 mV ORP test-solution sachets.[1][2] They also list the HI73127 pH electrode, removal tool, four 1.5 V cells, a quality certificate and manual.[1][2] Those are documented package statements, not an inspected carton or an individual uncertainty certificate; an ORP test solution is not evidence of a user-adjustable ORP calibration.

Care and measurement discipline

Electrode care and pH calibration are ongoing ownership responsibilities. The manual calls for calibration attention after pH-electrode replacement and challenging samples, and for suitable calibration, cleaning and storage supplies.[2] Its guidance does not establish a lifetime, fixed consumable cost or validated performance for an individual sample. This review does not reproduce a calibration, rinsing, soaking, maintenance or replacement procedure.

The stability indication describes the instrument’s settled-display state, not proof of correct chemistry or absence of contamination.[2] Assess method suitability and the applicable product labels or safety documentation before handling solutions. “Waterproof” and a displayed value are not permission for a hazardous environment or guarantees of sample safety; the manual cautions against hazardous environments.[2]

Limits and unresolved conflicts

The accuracy figures are published at 25°C/77°F; they are not a claim that those tolerances have been achieved in every environment or sample. The measured-temperature range reaches 60°C, but the stated operating environment is -5 to 50°C with maximum relative humidity of 100%. A 60°C reading range must not be reinterpreted as permission to operate the instrument in a 60°C ambient environment.[1][2]

The HI98121 is not a conductivity, TDS, salinity, disinfectant-concentration, pathogen, or health-compliance instrument. A pH or ORP number can inform a qualified procedure, but this reader alone cannot establish that a sample is safe, sterile, potable, or legally compliant.[2]

Power documentation specifies four 1.5 V cells and approximately 250 hours, not guaranteed runtime.[1][2] The manual’s replacement paragraph says “AA,” while its battery sketch depicts small cells; this review does not silently choose or repair the subtype.[2] Confirm the applicable replacement specification rather than treating an ambiguous paragraph as a servicing instruction.

Fit or skip

Choose it if you need a portable pH/ORP/temperature reader with a readable stability indicator, basic pH calibration, a replaceable documented pH electrode, and no requirement for automatic recordkeeping.[1][2]

Skip it if you require simultaneous independent pH and ORP capture, user ORP calibration, a replaceable ORP sensor, automatic logging, export, historical trend storage, traceable laboratory certification, or a standalone safety or compliance verdict. Also pause when the sample, ambient conditions, chemical handling, or application falls outside the manual and the responsible technical procedure. The unresolved ORP-electrode listing conflict should be settled with the seller or manufacturer before purchase when replaceability is essential.[1][2][3]

The buying decision

Conditional fit: the HI98121 is credible as a pH/ORP/temperature checking tool when used within the documented limits, with pH calibration and electrode care treated as responsibilities. It is not a substitute for a qualified method, a records system, or a safety/compliance determination.[1][2]
