Testo 417 Kit 1 Review: Funnel-Based Outlet Volume-Flow Records

Conditional verdict: Buy Testo 417 Kit 1 if you need funnel-based calculated volume-flow readings from ordinary indoor ventilation outlets, rather than velocity values requiring area math. Skip it if you need universal fit, outdoor or wet-duty use, a safety-critical or medical verdict, or a whole-system uncertainty claim.

Supplier image from the selected Amazon funnel-set offer. The example display is not a measurement performed for this review or proof of a matched funnel setting. Its pictured 603.4 m³/h does not override the maker’s 0–440 m³/h range for the documented Kit 1 funnel configuration. The photograph does not prove a seal, individual accuracy, included calibration certificate or shipped revision.[1][5]

The real reason to choose Kit 1

A vane meter can tell you how fast air is moving. That is useful, but it does not by itself answer the question many ventilation checks actually ask: how much air is passing through this outlet? The Testo 417 Kit 1 pairs the 4-inch vane instrument with two measurement funnels so the instrument can calculate and display volume flow at outlet locations. Testo describes the package for air inlets, outlets, plate outlets, ventilation grilles, and adjustment work on balanced residential ventilation systems. [1]

The purchase premise is a documented funnel configuration and an instrument-displayed calculated volume flow in CFM, m³/h or l/s, rather than a claim of universally fitting or faster measurement.[1][2]

What is actually in the package

Kit 1 order 0563 1417 includes the Testo 417 100 mm vane anemometer with App connection, the measuring funnel for plate outlets, the measuring funnel for ventilation grilles, a carrying bag, a test protocol, and three AA batteries. [1] The ordinary US offer reviewed for this copy is ASIN B0BT28DM3H and lists the same funnel-set concept with a transport bag, calibration protocol, and batteries; verify the current seller, contents, and price before ordering because retail listings can change. [5]

Do not assume this is Kit 2. A flow straightener is not part of Kit 1. The manual labels the included funnel geometry as 200 x 200 mm for plate outlets and 330 x 330 mm for ventilators; the datasheet separately describes the accessory funnel kit using an 8-inch round funnel and a 13 x 13-inch square funnel. Treat those labels as the documented configurations, not as a promise that every outlet will seal or fit. [2] [3]

The key setting: F.FACT, not ordinary area mode

For funnel measurements, the manual says to enable F.FACT. With it enabled, the 417 uses the funnel configuration instead of asking you to turn the outlet into a separate area calculation. AREA is a separate mode and the manual says the funnel factor must be disabled before setting an area. [2]

Kit 1 is a configuration to consider when the supplied funnels and their documented range suit the outlet. Arbitrary-area entry is a different setting path; the broad base output range does not validate every outlet or a funnel seal.[2]

Range, accuracy, and what the numbers do not prove

With the 0563 4170 funnel set, the maker lists a volume-flow range of 0 to 440 m³/h, or 0 to 259 CFM. The optional funnel-and-flow-straightener configuration is listed separately at 0.1 to 200 m³/h, or 0.1 to 118 CFM, with a preferred 0.1 to 100 m³/h range. Those are configuration-specific published ranges; do not substitute the base instrument’s 0 to 99,999 m³/h or 58,857 CFM display range for Kit 1’s funnel range. [1]

The current maker publishes velocity accuracy of ±(0.1 m/s + 1.5% of reading).[1] The manual specifies adjustment in a 350 mm free jet at 1013 hPa using Testo’s reference Laser Doppler Anemometer; the datasheet velocity-error header also includes ±1 digit.[2][3] None of this establishes achieved whole-kit volumetric uncertainty after outlet fit, sealing or pressure effects. The included protocol must not be confused with the separately listed NIST velocity-calibration services, or with an individual NIST flow certificate.[1][3]

A practical documentation workflow

The instrument calculates time and point averages, and it can run multi-point or continuous mean calculations. The testo Smart App can provide a second display, configuration controls, graph and table views, and exports such as CSV, JSON, or PDF through the documented app and connected-service workflow. [2] [4] This is useful when a technician needs a readable record of several outlet checks instead of copying one display value by hand.

The model-specific Data Act information describes single-measurement data stored in the Smart App on the smartphone, with optional DataControl access.[4] It does not establish an unattended logger, cloud-retention guarantee or permanent archive. The manual lists iOS 13 or later, Android 8 or later and Bluetooth 4.2, without establishing tested compatibility on a current phone.[2] When connected, settings are made via the app while the instrument remains in measurement view.[2]

Where Kit 1 should be a skip

Skip, or pause for a different configuration, when the outlet is a swirl diffuser and your method requires a flow straightener. Testo documents that accessory separately, and Kit 1 does not include it; do not promise adequate results for every swirl pattern. Also pause when you need a claimed seal or fit across unlisted dimensions, because the published geometry does not prove universal outlet compatibility.[1][2][3]

The manual specifies indoor use, excludes potentially explosive atmospheres and medical diagnostic measurements, and warns against measuring live components.[2] This is not an instruction to shut down every airflow source; use only an appropriately safe, ordinary outlet/reference setting. The manual and current maker state IP10, while the US datasheet separates instrument IP40 and probe IP20.[1][2][3] Do not reconcile these into a guaranteed whole-kit rating or wet-use claim.

Buy decision and setup expectations

Buy when your work involves accessible, ordinary indoor outlets and the question is outlet volume flow. Before ordering, compare the exact current offer for ASIN B0BT28DM3H or manufacturer listing 0563 1417, confirm the two funnels and test protocol, and check whether your outlet resembles the documented plate-outlet or grille use case. Do not buy on a dated discount or stock message alone.

The documented kit includes three AA batteries; published 50-hour battery life is not a runtime achieved in this review.[1][3] The manual limits humidity to 0–80% RH indoors and operating temperature to −4–122°F; measured air-temperature range is separately 32–122°F.[2] Plan for the correct F.FACT setting and, if using app records, a compatible host; averages are not proof of ventilation adequacy.

The buying decision

Buy Kit 1 for a defined funnel-outlet volume-flow workflow: two funnels, automatic calculation, averages, temperature, and app documentation. Skip it for arbitrary fitting, swirl work requiring a straightener, outdoor or wet environments, hazardous or medical applications, or guaranteed whole-system uncertainty.
