A&D FX-120i Review: Separate Small-Sample Mass from the Microscope Image

Buy a separate mass record, not an image overlay

The A&D FX-120i is worth shortlisting when you need to weigh small samples separately, tare their containers, and record a stabilized mass reading. A&D’s exact product record describes 122g capacity, 0.001g readability and external calibration. [1] This is a bench weighing decision, not a microscope-image measurement or an integrated viewing station. A photograph and a balance reading answer different questions.

If the real task is looking at surface features or measuring distances in an image, a balance does not solve it. If a separate mass record matters, decide what capacity, calibration and environmental control your method requires before choosing by the number of display digits. This review is documentation-based; no weighing, repeatability or calibration test was performed.

The displayed milligram is not an accuracy guarantee

The maker lists 0.001g readability and separately lists repeatability and linearity. The FX-120i manual calls the increment the minimum weighing value of one digit, with a 122g weighing capacity. [1] [2] Do not turn that increment into a guaranteed error bound, a traceable result or proof that every tiny difference you observe is significant.

The selected offer is ASIN B004C3ASHG, explicitly titled FX-120i Series FX-i Precision Balance, 122g, 110V. [3] It is not the FZ internal-calibration version, a waterproof WP variant, or an automatically substituted successor. Family marketing about IP65 or one-touch internal calibration does not establish those benefits for this plain FX-120i.

External calibration changes the ownership routine

The maker labels FX-120i calibration as external. The manual describes calibrating with an external weight and lists 100g and 50g usable weights for FX-120i. [1] [2] An appropriate mass is part of that procedure, but the selected seller does not itemize a calibration weight as included. Confirm the materials and applicable calibration requirements; do not assume a calibration mass or certificate comes with the instrument.

The manual calls for at least 30 minutes’ warmup with an empty pan, levelling with the feet and bubble indicator, and calibration before use or after moving the balance. [2] Those preparation requirements are part of the purchase decision. A quick display response claim is not a substitute for the documented setup or your method’s quality checks.

Tare and stability are useful without a computer

The documented basic workflow uses RE-ZERO to cancel container weight and reads the value after the stabilization indicator appears. MODE selects weighing units; PRINT supports data output through the interface. [2] You can choose a standalone display-and-written-record workflow without buying a computer connection. We have not established automatic synchronization between a balance result and a microscope photograph.

A&D lists RS-232C and optional USB/Ethernet routes; the manual says separately sold peripheral equipment is required for its printer or computer output workflow. [1] [2] Do not expect the core offer to include a printer, converter or USB cable. Confirm the supported deployment if export is essential rather than assuming every historical computer instruction applies to your current machine.

Verify the actual power and shield package

The manual’s unpacking illustration includes the balance, pan and support, small breeze-break assembly for FX-120i and an AC adapter. It explicitly requires the correct adapter for the local voltage and receptacle. [2] The exact retailer title says 110V, but does not itemize the full carton. [3] Confirm the supplied local adapter, shield and accessories before ordering; an illustration does not prove the seller’s package.

The maker page lists “AC Adapter (120V/220V)” under accessory TB:648. That is an accessory entry, not evidence that this particular offered unit has a 220V input or a universal-input adapter. [1] Do not select a replacement power supply from that label alone. The maker page also currently says out of stock, while the observed retailer offer accepts orders; these are separate availability observations, not a guarantee of shipment timing. [1] [3]

The buying decision

Shortlist FX-120i when a separate tare-and-stabilize mass record fits a defined small-sample method, and you can provide the calibration and environmental controls it needs. Skip it for image dimensions, integrated camera capture or an expectation that three decimal places automatically provide validated measurement confidence. Verify the exact carton and local adapter, and establish the applicable calibration method before ordering. Neither the product page nor this review establishes achieved accuracy, traceability or legal-for-trade approval.
