Apogee MQ-500 Review: Plant-Light Spot Checks and Logged PPFD

Shortlist it for plant-canopy light records

The Apogee MQ-500 is worth considering when the job is checking or recording photosynthetic photon flux density—PPFD—at a plant canopy, rather than judging how a photograph looks. Apogee describes a quantum-meter workflow for the 400–700 nm PAR band, using a handheld display and cabled sensor. [1] [2] This is not a color-rendering meter, microscope-image calibration or a promise of plant growth.

The selected offer B09KWQJ8XP is the MQ-500, sold by Apogee Instruments’ official store in the observed listing. [4] It is not an AM-330 wand bundle, underwater-corrected model or extended-range ePAR substitute. This is a source-backed buying review, not a light-measurement test.

A spot reading and a daily total answer different questions

The manual describes standalone live PPFD display and manual SMPL mode storing up to 99 readings. SAMPLE records a reading, while UP/DOWN can review stored measurements. [2] For a canopy survey, decide what positions and conditions you need to record before buying a meter because it has memory. We have not established a spatial sampling plan or validated your lighting.

LOG mode samples every 30 seconds, stores a 30-minute average, and keeps up to 99 averages before overwriting the oldest. Each set of 48 averages also generates a daily total. [2] A few manual readings are not a measured daily light integral. Distinguish the spot value from the duration-based record you actually need.

Daily totals require a download workflow

The manual explicitly says integrated daily totals cannot be viewed on the LCD; they require downloading to a computer. Stored SMPL readings and LOG averages can be reviewed on the meter. [2] If you only need live or manually recorded readings, computer export is optional. If accessible daily totals are the buying premise, verify the complete export setup before ordering.

The manual names a separately sold AC-100 communication cable and explains that ordinary USB cables cannot substitute for the required UART conversion. The current maker page calls AC-110 the updated AC-100 adapter and again says a standard cable cannot connect directly. [2] [3] That accessory page’s included USB-A-to-USB-C cable is not an inclusion in the MQ-500 meter offer. Confirm the appropriate adapter and supported computer; no software installation or modern-host test was performed here.

Waterproof sensor does not mean waterproof handheld

The MQ-500 manual says the sensor head and cable are waterproof, but the handheld meter is not. It also states the sensor is not calibrated for underwater measurement. [2] Do not transfer underwater-corrected operation from another model or assume a waterproof sensor makes the display safe to submerge. If underwater use determines the purchase, verify the appropriate model and correction documentation first.

The manual calls for a level sensor when measuring a horizontal plane. [2] Geometry and placement are part of the record, not details a “full-spectrum” name removes. The sensor measures incident light on its surface; it does not measure a plant’s response, identify a specimen or report UV exposure safety.

Know what the specification and package establish

The MQ-500 table labels ±5% as calibration uncertainty, and the manual discusses spectral mismatch when a source differs from the calibration spectrum. [2] We do not turn that field into guaranteed installed accuracy, repeated-reading performance or a claim that unlike lamps compare without method-specific uncertainty. Record source, position and conditions with the reading.

The manual describes the handheld meter with its cabled sensor and an included CR2320 battery; the exact retailer also lists an included lithium-metal battery. [2] [4] Confirm the current carton, including any pictured case. Do not count a wand, leveling plate, mounting bracket or communication interface as supplied merely because the maker recommends accessories.

The manual’s cable row says 2m, while its mass field refers to 5m of lead wire. [2] We do not resolve that by inventing a revision or promise an exact lead length from either field. Confirm reach if it affects your canopy survey.

The buying decision

Shortlist MQ-500 for a defined plant-light PPFD record when standalone spot checks or its documented sampling modes fit your method. Skip it for spectral color analysis, underwater-corrected readings by default, camera-image calibration or a plant-yield guarantee. If daily totals are central, verify the separate export route before purchase. Choose by the quantity and record you need—not by assuming every form of “light measurement” is interchangeable.

The maker-linked 25-page MQ-500 manual is marked Rev: 5-Feb-2026. That identifies the retrieved document, not the revision delivered by the seller. Its daily-total quantity is per day; a different daily-total unit in product-page prose is not adopted here. [1] [2]
