Solarmeter Model 5.0 Review: A Broadband UV-Source Record, Not a Safety Verdict

Shortlist it for a documented UV-source record

The Solarmeter Model 5.0 is worth considering when a technically competent UV-equipment owner needs a handheld broadband source-intensity record, not a visible-light, PAR or color-rendering measurement. The maker’s data sheet labels it a Total UV (A+B) meter with a 0–199.9 mW/cm² readout. [2] Do not interpret that displayed quantity as UV Index, a prescribed biological dose or proof of safe exposure.

Solarmeter is Solar Light Company’s handheld-meter brand. The selected Amazon offer B01GT4EID0 is Model 5.0, sold by Solar Light Company in the observed listing. [3] [4] This is a documentation-based review; no lamp, shielding, meter accuracy or exposure test was performed. Buy only for a defined measurement task with source-specific safety controls.

A single-button reading still needs a method

The maker’s operation section documents pressing and holding the face-mounted push button while reading the display, with the sensor window on top. It says to retain the distance and location when following lamp aging. [1] That is a useful reason to choose a simple handheld readout for a written source record. It is not evidence that changing the source, spectrum or geometry leaves measurements comparable.

For a future record, identify the instrument and source, known source spectrum, measurement position and orientation, displayed units, source condition and relevant uncertainty. This is a suggested record structure, not measurements we have taken or an exposure procedure. Do not assume stored logging or a computer-export workflow from the presence of a digital display.

The response is not flat across UV wavelengths

The data sheet explicitly says readings from different lamp types should be considered relative rather than absolute. It also says lamps peaking near 365 nm read higher than lamps peaking near 350 nm. [2] A change in displayed value between unlike sources is therefore not automatically the same proportional change in their total UV output.

The retrieved spectral-response graph is non-flat. [2] If your application requires a precise spectral cutoff, a source-weighted result or a validated absolute comparison across different spectra, obtain the appropriate instrument and calibration-method documentation rather than choosing this meter simply because it says “UV.” We have not established those outcomes.

Resolve the band-label conflict before a cutoff-dependent purchase

The current maker product page says 260–400 nm; the linked data sheet and the selected offer say 280–400 nm. [1] [2] [4] Both readings are retained. We have not established a revision history, an out-of-band rejection ratio or a guaranteed lower cutoff. This review does not silently choose one or certify zero response outside the stated range.

The documented broadband UVA/B-source role can support a conditional source-recording decision, but it does not establish suitability as a UVC meter, UVB-only meter or human-safety instrument. Resolve exact response and calibration applicability with the maker when they determine whether your task works.

Power and calibration claims have limits

The data sheet specifies a 9-Volt DC battery power source. The maker’s operation text describes battery-related dimming as a replacement indication. [1] [2] Neither the selected offer’s captured fields nor that power specification establishes that its carton includes a battery or case. Confirm those items and the applicable operating document before ordering; a customer review is not an exact-package guarantee.

The data sheet’s accuracy field is “±5% Ref. NIST.” [2] That is a publisher specification, not an inspected calibration certificate for the unit you will receive or a test result here. If measurement confidence depends on traceability, ask for the exact instrument’s calibration documentation and applicable conditions; do not treat the display resolution or brand name as a substitute.

Do not use a reading as permission for exposure

Retain the UV source’s enclosures, shielding and interlocks, restrict access, and follow its source-specific safety documentation and a competent risk assessment. Avoid direct eye or skin exposure. This guide does not tell you to bypass protective controls or test people, and does not certify sunglasses, shields, treatment efficacy or tanning safety.

The maker’s instructions warn against extremes of temperature, humidity, shock and dust and call for keeping the sensor clean. [1] [2] Handling conditions belong in the method too. We do not turn care instructions into a durability, waterproofing or calibration-stability guarantee.

The buying decision

Shortlist Model 5.0 for a defined, safely controlled broadband UV-source record when its response and documented readout suit your method. Skip it for clinical dose, UV Index, proof of safe human exposure, or an unverified cutoff-dependent task. Confirm the current package and calibration requirements. The observed offer accepts orders, but its unexposed stock field does not promise immediate delivery. [4]
