AmScope SM745NTP Review: Keep the Stand, Replace the Head

Shortlist the AmScope SM745NTP when your existing stereo stand still does the job, but the head no longer supports the way you want to work. This is a head-only purchase: a 7×–45× zoom optical assembly with 10× focusable eyepieces and a simul-focal photo port.[1][2] AmScope says the camera can operate while both eyepieces remain usable.[1][2]

The useful upgrade is retaining a compatible support while changing the viewing and imaging arrangement—not buying another boom base you do not need. Keep your existing head if it already provides the required viewing and capture route. Choose a complete microscope kit if the stand, focusing rack and illumination are also missing.

Keep the stand only after checking its actual interface

AmScope specifies a 76 mm mounting collar and names its SAW, DAW and BBB boom stands among the supported arrangements.[1] That is the head-mount dimension, not the 30 mm eyepiece-tube diameter or the camera-port size.[1] Check the actual collar, focusing rack and retaining arrangement on the support you intend to keep.

Fit is more than matching a diameter. The rack must position the head over the specimen and provide the needed focus adjustment; the support must accommodate the complete assembly, including any camera, optical adapter and attached light. Do not treat a familiar brand name as a load rating or assume that every stand sold for stereo work accepts this head.

If you also need a new rack or stand, compare the whole purchase rather than the head’s price alone. A head-only order is useful because you already have suitable supporting hardware—not because it guarantees a lower total cost.

A camera port without giving up both-eyepiece viewing

The SM745NTP’s technical table specifies a slide-adjustable 23 mm CX-type photo tube with a 50:50 simul-focal arrangement.[1] The maker explicitly describes camera use alongside both eyepieces, and the exact Amazon description repeats that behavior.[1][2] That matters when the camera is there to share or record the work while you keep direct stereo viewing.

This is not a promise that any camera will arrive in focus, remain perfectly matched through every zoom setting or record at a particular frame rate. The photo-port adjustment helps set up the camera’s focus; the exact camera, optical adapter and host or monitor still determine the capture workflow.[1]

There is no camera in the standard packing list.[1] Check the complete connection rather than treating “trinocular,” C-mount or a nearly matching slip-tube number as proof of compatibility. Choose live viewing, saved video or still capture first, then match the parts.

Know which adjustment belongs to the eyepiece

The supplied pair is 10× widefield, high-eyepoint eyepieces with integrated focus adjustment. The ocular tubes themselves have no separate dioptric adjustment listed.[1] AmScope’s family comparison calls them fixed eyepiece tubes; that does not mean the supplied eyepieces are non-focusable.[1]

The native objective zoom is 0.7×–4.5×, giving 7×–45× viewing with those eyepieces. AmScope lists 100 mm native working distance and a zoom lock.[1] The lock helps retain a setting; it is not evidence of calibrated magnification or return-to-setting accuracy.

If you replace an existing head used for camera measurements, recalibrate the actual capture configuration. Do not carry over a software scale just because the new assembly has a familiar zoom range.

The standard order is not a complete workstation

The itemized package is the simul-focal head, one pair of 10× focusable eyepieces, photo port and hex wrench. It does not list a stand, focusing rack, camera, light or auxiliary Barlow lens.[1][2] Amazon’s generic light-source and computer-compatibility fields do not add those parts to the box.

Recheck retained lighting too. AmScope lists a 48 mm female accessory thread, but nominal diameter alone does not settle a threaded lens connection or a ring light’s mounting arrangement.[1][2] Confirm the actual accessory and any change to the assembled viewing space before counting it as reusable.

The microscope accessory guide separates support, lighting and imaging choices. Use it to identify what the existing bench actually lacks before turning a head replacement into a string of additional purchases.

Bottom line

The SM745NTP is a useful modular choice when you can retain a verified-compatible 76 mm support and want simultaneous camera use and direct two-eyepiece viewing. Buy it as an optical head, not as a complete microscope or a guaranteed plug-in imaging system. If the current head already meets the task, keep it; if the support and lighting also need replacing, compare complete configurations.
