Shimpo FGE-20XY Review: Axial Push/Pull Force Records Beside Inspection

Conditional buying note: The Shimpo FGE-20XY is best understood as a compact materials-bench force gauge for recording axial push and pull forces alongside visual inspection—not as a mass-weighing instrument or proof of medical, brake, firearm, safety-certification, or production-tolerance compliance.

What the FGE-20XY records

The model is listed at 20 lb, 10.00 Kg, and 100.0 N capacity, with 0.01 lb, 0.01 Kg, and 0.1 N resolution.[1][2] Those are the publisher’s displayed force-mode labels; do not mistake the publisher’s Kg force-mode label for a mass-balance measurement or assume the capacity labels are exact unit conversions. The stated accuracy is ±0.2% of full scale, while resolution is only the display increment.[1] The dealer datasheet qualifies that accuracy at 73°F (23°C), so a fine-looking display is not the same thing as achieved measurement precision. [1] [2]

For a bench record, use the appropriate attachment and keep the applied force in line with the measuring shaft. The manual describes tension and compression, with the hook for tensile work and flat head for compression; it expressly warns against measuring at an angle.[1] That makes this a reasonable candidate for axial material checks when the fixture and method are controlled, but not a license to infer strength, safety, or durability from one reading. The image does not establish the carton, charger rating, calibration paperwork, or shipped revision.

Modes, timing, and interpretation

The gauge can show a live averaged reading or a peak reading.[1] UNIT changes displayed units; in peak mode, ZERO clears the held peak, and the display can be reversed for the included hanger or a test-stand orientation.[1] A minus-sign setting is available for direction display.[1] These controls support a simple record such as sample ID, push or pull direction, attachment, displayed unit, live/peak mode, and observed value; they do not establish multi-axis measurement, onboard export, or a current log. [1]

The documents state a 1000 Hz sampling rate and selectable display updates of 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.5, or 1 second.[1][2] Sampling rate is not a promise of data-output bandwidth or validated dynamic response. For slow, controlled bench observations, choose a display interval deliberately and identify whether the recorded number is live average or held peak. [1] [2]

Power and package boundaries

Both documents describe rechargeable Ni-MH battery operation or an AC adapter/charger.[1][2] Under “Battery Charge,” the manual lists 10 hours when fully charged, while the dealer datasheet lists 12.[1][2] Their respective recharge figures are approximately 17 and 18 hours when fully discharged.[1][2] That is a source conflict, not a blended runtime guarantee. The dealer sheet calls the adapter universal, 100–240 VAC, 50/60 Hz, but that does not verify the rating of a particular shipped adapter. [1] [2]

The documented standard accessories are an AC adapter/charger, carrying case, hook, chisel, flat head, notched head, hanger, cone head, thread adapter, and extension rod. A test stand, calibration stand, weights, or traceable calibration certificate should not be assumed included. Confirm the exact carton contents and supplied revision with the seller. [1] [2]

Safety limits that change the decision

Keep the force axial and hand-tighten attachments; the manual says not to use a wrench or other tool on the shaft.[1] Do not operate or store the gauge in explosive areas or near water, oil, dust, or chemicals, and keep it within 32–104°F (0–40°C).[1] The manual lists 200% of full-scale overload for the series, except 200 lb models at 150%; that is a rated overload statement, not permission to operate at overload.[1][2] Separately, its error guidance identifies a load exceeding 120% of capacity.[1] Those numbers should not be collapsed into one operating range. [1] [2]

The buying decision

Consider the FGE-20XY when you need a portable, axial push/pull force indication for controlled materials-bench records and can document fixture, direction, mode, and environment. Do not buy it on the assumption that resolution equals accuracy, that 1000 Hz equals a validated dynamic test system, that a stand or certificate is included, or that the listed overload figures authorize loading beyond capacity. The selected ordinary retail title identifies FGE-20XY, not the FGV or FG-3000 families.[3]

The original manual is six physical pages; the datasheet is two. Retrieval and matching model tables do not establish the revision or accessories in the selected seller’s carton.[1][2]
