Labnet Orbit 300 Review: 120V Base and Separate S2030-12 Flat Platform

Short version: the practical Orbit 300 choice here is one 120V base, model S2030-300-B (120V), paired with one separate 30 x 30 cm S2030-12 flat platform with a nonslip rubber mat. The base and platform are separate purchases, not an all-platform kit. It suits a prepared, nonhazardous professional bench workflow for plates, dishes, boxes, and similarly appropriate containers. This source-based review does not establish clinical suitability, sterility, viability, mixing uniformity, or validated-process performance.[1][2]

Configuration reviewed: Orbit 300 S2030-300-B (120V) base without platform + separate S2030-12 flat platform with nonslip mat.

Supplier family illustration of an Orbit 300 with a spring-bar platform, tube rack and tubes, not the selected flat-platform configuration
Supplier family illustration from the selected Amazon listings: the pictured spring-bar platform, rack and tubes are not the S2030-12 flat configuration reviewed here and do not establish included contents. The 120V base is listed without a platform; the flat platform is a separate purchase.[3][4]

What this configuration actually includes

The selected base listing identifies the S2030-300-B Orbit 300 as “Without Platform, 120V.” The maker lists three interchangeable platforms as available separately: S2030-10 for four microplates, S2030-12 as a 30 x 30 cm flat platform with a nonslip rubber mat, and S2030-13 as the spring-loaded platform for flasks, bottles, and other containers.[1][3] Only S2030-12 is selected here. Do not read a shared family photograph or the product-family description as proof that the microplate or spring-loaded platform ships with this purchase.

The flat mat is the right accessory when the planned load is compatible with a flat, nonslip surface. It is not a spring-loaded flask-retention system. If your work depends on securing flasks, bottles, racks, or other tall vessels, the S2030-13 is a different accessory and must be assessed separately. The manual lists a 2 kg maximum load for the Orbit 300.[2] This is not a retention test for every vessel shape at maximum speed.

Controls and timer: read the display correctly

The manual specifies digital, load-independent regulation from 100 to 1,200 rpm in 10 rpm steps, with a 3 mm orbit.[2] Use the Orbit 300 row of the family manual rather than importing another model’s speed or orbit specifications. The set value is shown on the three-digit display. A manual example of 120 means 1,200 rpm, not 120 rpm.[2]

Timer behavior is equally specific. The range is 30 seconds to 99 minutes 50 seconds in 10-second steps, with one-second steps under 10 minutes, plus a HOLD function.[2] The display’s 99.5 means 99 minutes 50 seconds; it does not mean 99.5 decimal minutes. 9.59 means 9 minutes 59 seconds, while 0.30 means 30 seconds.[2] To select HOLD, the operator moves beyond the timed range until “HLd” appears.[2] The manual says the set time cannot be modified during shaking, but RPM can be changed.[2] These are controls and display conventions, not evidence of timer accuracy, exported logging, a heat controller, or a validated recipe.

Where the evidence conflicts

The maker page reports 120 V, 60 Hz, a 4° to 65°C ambient range, and dimensions of 10.1 x 12.5 x 5 inches at 16 lb. The REV3 manual reports 120 V ±10%, 50/60 Hz, a 5° to 40°C range at up to 85% relative humidity non-condensing, and dimensions of 10.3 x 13.3 x 5.1 inches at 12.35 lb.[1][2] Those sources disagree; this review cannot establish which dimensions or ambient limits describe a delivered unit. Confirm the delivered label, cord, rating, current footprint, and available bench space before installation. The manual’s 15 W entry is labeled motor power; it does not establish mains current.[2]

Safe, limited use

Use the assembled configuration indoors on a horizontal, level, stable surface with at least 4 inches/10 cm of clearance for air circulation. The manual specifies use up to 2,000 m altitude, Pollution Degree 2, and a properly grounded, fused outlet.[2] Keep water away, avoid caustic or explosive atmospheres, and do not shake inflammable or explosive samples. Unplug before cleaning; use a damp, not wet, cloth and avoid aggressive or abrasive cleaners.[2]

Platform attachment is not a reason to call the package fully assembled or maintenance-free. The manual says the flat platform uses its center cut-out and screws, and that the slide stabilizers should be properly fastened, adjusted, and lubricated before attachment. It gives a 1,000-working-hour/one-year grease interval for that stabilizer guidance.[2] This article does not provide step-by-step assembly or electrical-service instructions. Stop and use qualified support if the unit is damaged, spills occur, or an error persists.

For a professional bench record, note the container or load, platform, RPM, timer or HOLD setting, start time, and visible context. Treat the record as an operational note, not proof of mixing uniformity, repeatability, timer accuracy, certified safety, or a particular scientific outcome.

Check both product listings before ordering: the selected 120V base is offered without a platform, and the S2030-12 is a separate purchase.[3][4] A source photograph showing an assembled shaker does not turn two listings into one shipment. Confirm the current delivery dates and the exact accessories on each order.

The buying decision

Choose this one configuration when you want the Orbit 300’s digital 100–1,200 rpm control and timed operation for suitable flat-surface loads, and you are prepared to verify fit, electrical labeling, containment, and the exact delivered accessories. Choose a different setup when you need spring-loaded vessel retention, four-microplate capacity, validated process performance, or environmental limits beyond the manual’s stated range.
